Micro OWL 2 Series Optical Power Meters
|
|
|
The Micro OWL 2 is one of the world’s
smallest optical power meters to offer so
many features, including a 0.15 dB accuracy
over its normal operating range. It is as
feature-packed and accurate as optical power
meters costing hundreds of dollars more.
This combination of features, size,
accuracy, and price make it a tremendous
value for the optical fiber professional.
The Micro OWL 2 is a high accuracy, high
resolution, microprocessor controlled,
optical power meter. It has an small
handheld case made from high impact plastic,
a backlit, graphic, liquid crystal display,
and 18-key keypad for easy data entry. It
can be ordered with an integrated visual
fault locator (in the place of the battery
charger). The meter will operate for over
100 hrs on a standard 9v battery and has
built-in automatic shutdown.
The Micro OWL 2
includes a built-in Fiber Loss Wizard that
helps you easily calculate the allowable
loss for the fiber runs that you will be
measuring. The meter stores physical fiber
characteristics for four different
locations, or links. This includes: link
name, date, fiber type, fiber length,
connectors, splices, temperature, and
calculated or entered reference power values
for three wavelengths. In addition the
meter will store up to 1000 measured data
points with labels. Each value includes the
fiber type and link. The stored information
can be selectively viewed, edited (measured
again), printed, or deleted. The meter will
print formatted reports of selected stored
data directly using the built in serial
port, or all of the stored data can be
downloaded to our free
OWL Reporter™
data management and
reporting software. |

WaveSource Series
Fiber Optic Light
Sources |
|
WaveSource series
fiber optic light
sources offer the
fiber optic
professional a wide
range of options for
their testing
needs. Many
different
combinations are
available: multimode
only, singlemode
only, or both
multimode and
singlemode. Our
quad-wavelength
version (WS-MDSD)
has all four
wavelengths (850,
1300, 1310, 1550) in
one unit! Visual
Fault Locators (VFL)
can also be added to
multimode only and
singlemode only
versions. VFLs can
be used in both
multimode and
singlemode fibers.
All versions of the
WaveSource have two
transmission modes:
Continuous Wave (CW)
for accurate
temperature-stabilized
fiber optic tests;
and modulated mode.
Modulated mode
provides for an
auto-testing
function when used
with the Fiber OWL 4
or WaveTester
optical power
meters. The
modulated signal
from the WaveSource
tells the WaveTester
to switch to the
currently selected
wavelength, which
eliminates much of
the guesswork during
tests, and saves
valuable time.
WaveSource light
sources come
configured with your
choice of SC, ST, or
FC connector ports. |

PCVFL
(Precision
Coupled
Visual
Fault
Locator) |
|
PCVFL
(Precision Coupled Visual Fault Locator) is
a light-weight, hand-held tool used to
quickly troubleshoot faults in the
continuity of both single mode and
multi-mode fibers, especially at fiber
launch points or in OTDR dead zones. A high
intensity visible red laser beam is
precision-coupled into a optical fiber;
breaks and micro-bends in the fiber deflect
the red light into the fiber jacket,
producing a red glow at the point of the
fault. |

Typical
battery life in CW mode is 15 hours, and the
short 12.5% duty cycle in pulsed mode
extends the battery life to 120 hours of
continuous use.
The PCVFL
ships standard with ST connectors.

An example of
PCVFL being used as a fiber identifier up to
5 kilometers in a singlemode or mutlimode
fiber link. |
 |
|
Additionally,
the PCVFL can be used as an end-to-end
visual fiber identifier, which is useful for
locating fibers terminated in poorly labeled
or unlabeled fiber patch panels. A
single switch is used to operate the PCVFL,
toggling the unit between OFF, CW
(continuous wave), and Pulsed modes
An example of
PCVFL being used as a fault locator:
Extreme
caution must be exercised when operating the
PCVFL. Lasers such as the ones in the PCVFL
produce intense beams of laser light that
are harmful to the eye. Exposure to such
energy can cause serious retina damage, and
prolonged exposure can cause blindness. TO
ENSURE YOUR SAFETY: NEVER LOOK INTO A LIGHT
SOURCE OR THE END OF A FIBER THAT MAY BE
ENERGIZED BY A SOURCE! |
